To date, however, there is still little under-standing of whether or how changes in affect and stress are relatedto job search intensity. Because job search intensityis an important predictor of job search success, understandinginfluences on job search intensity is a critical research area(Kanfer et al., 2001). As such, the jobsearch is a self-regulated learning process during which individualsneed to manage their emotions and stress to maintain or evenincrease their job search intensity in order to find a job (Creed,King, Good, & McKenzie, 2009 Kanfer, Wanberg, & Kantrowitz,2001 Turban, Stevens, & Lee, 2009). Such results suggest controltheory can be extended by including between-subjects differences in LGO.Īs job seekers attempt to find a job, they experience variabilityin their emotions, stress, and job search intensity. Additionally, job seekers higher in LGO maintained their job search intensityfollowing increased positive affect, whereas those lower in LGO decreased it. For job seekers higher inLGO, perceived stress was more strongly positively related to subsequent job search intensity than for jobseekers lower in LGO. We integratedlearning goal orientation (LGO) with control theory to theorize that affect and perceived stress providesignals about job search progress that are interpreted differently depending on job seekers’ LGO.Specifically, higher LGO would lead to more adaptive responses to increased affect and perceived stress. Results from job seekers with 4 waves of panel data supported our hypotheses.
